Take The Time To Choose The Right Lawyer

Trust.  Its easy to lose isn’t it?  If you are reading this you are likely having some trust issues right now with your spouse, and possibly others.  Loss of trust is one of the primary issues that our clients are dealing with when they come to see us.

 You need to know that trust is going to be very important for you when you go through the divorce process.  Especially the trust that you will need to have in your lawyer.  You are going to need to make numerous important decisions in the coming weeks and months.  Decisions that will impact your life both short-term and long-term.  Guidance from your lawyer while navigating the minefield of a divorce is going to be crucial.  But what if you don’t trust him?

 The best way to not end up in this situation is to make sure you choose the right lawyer from the beginning.  Most people have no idea where to start looking for a lawyer, much less have ever been in a lawyer’s office.  It is completely unknown and intimidating and scary.  The good news is that the best way to start is by doing two things you already do everyday.

 One is to search the internet.  Today, there is a vast amount of information about law firms and lawyers available for free on the internet.  Many lawyers have websites and provide a wealth of information on them.  Some sites, like AVVO.com, provide ratings of lawyers as well as previous client reviews and reviews from other lawyers.  You should be able to get a good feel for the different types of lawyers in your area by searching these resources.

 Another way is to talk with your friends and family.  Chances are pretty good that one or more of your friends has had experience with a lawyer in one way or another.  Ask them their thoughts on the experience.  Would they use that lawyer again?  What is their reputation?

 There will be many choices available.  Choose the best two or three and schedule appointments to meet with them.  Ask them about their experience in the legal field.  How would they handle your case?  Have they had cases like yours?  How many?  Do they have the time and staff to handle your case?  What are their fees and how are they to be paid?  Once you have this information, and have met with your top prospects, you will then be in a position to go with the attorney that you feel will be the best fit for you.

 Remember, it is easy to pick the first lawyer’s name you hear and just go with it.  Do some research and take a little time in your choice and you will be much better off in the long run.
